Riding establishment licence

If you let out horses or ponies for hire or provide riding school services you will require a licence under the Riding Establishments Act 1964. 

Licences are renewed annually and run for twelve months from date of issue.

Fees

The fee for a riding establishment licence is £180 plus vet's fees. 

If we need to re-inspect the premises we charge re-inspection fee.

Application process

Your licence will run for a year from 1 April.

You will need to provide copies of the following:

  • Public liability insurance

  • Qualification certificates (optional) 

A veterinary surgeon and a council officer will make an inspection of the premises and animals.  The cost of the veterinary inspection will be paid by the applicant.

We will issue a licence once the inspection confirms that the premises meet all specified conditions. The licence is issued with a copy of the specified conditions and an invoice for the veterinary costs. The conditions must be kept to at all times and the licence should be on visible display.
