Article 4 directions

An article 4 direction is made by the local planning authority. It restricts the scope of permitted development rights either in relation to a particular area or site, or a particular type of development.

This means that you may have to submit a planning application for work which does not normally need one. An article 4 direction is specific to the area it covers and can restrict a range of works from extensions and garden structures, to painting the exterior of your house.

Article 4 directions are made when the character of an area would be threatened by inappropriate works being carried out. They offer additional protection to an area and are most common in conservation areas. There are a number of Article 4 directions in Lewes district and one in Eastbourne. Further details of these are provided below for the relevant area.

Newhaven Article 4 directions

Non-immediate Article 4 directions have been proposed under Article 4(1) to withdraw permitted development rights for changes of use from office to residential and light industrial to residential after 12 month's notice. They were approved by Lewes District Council Planning Applications Committee on 11th October 2017 and are proposed to come into force on 5th November 2018 subject to consultation.
