Public realm improvements

Eastbourne Borough Council and East Sussex County Council have had a longstanding ambition to see improvements to the public realm and transport interchange to create a modern, welcoming and relaxing environment in the heart of the town centre, along Terminus Road and Cornfield Road.

Working with Stagecoach, Brighton & Hove Buses, Southern Rail and Network Rail, the scheme will ensure that public transport continues to work well in terms of meeting the needs of passengers whilst providing an attractive environment along Terminus Road and Cornfield Road which will attract visitors, residents and new businesses to the area.

Legal and General’s proposals to invest £85 million in the town centre with the extension to the Arndale, provided an opportunity to undertake complementary improvements.

The new scheme includes:

  • Widened footways along Terminus Road to help to address existing pedestrian congestion.

  • The relocation of bus stops into Cornfield Road to contribute to creating a less crowded space along Terminus Road.

  • The introduction of carefully selected trees and plants to help to ‘soften’ the area and some of these spaces will contain seated areas providing pleasant spaces to relax.

  • New paving creating a flush surface through Terminus Road from Ashford Road to Cornfield Road.

  • For a section of Terminus Road between Ashford Road and Cornfield Road, the carriageway will be reduced to a one lane width, to create a more pedestrian friendly environment.

  • All of the old street furniture i.e. railings, bins, signs and bike stands will be removed and new modern street furniture will be incorporated into the scheme.

  • The new bus shelters in Cornfield Road will be of a modern glazed design.

The initial phase of the works to the railway station forecourt were completed at the end of 2015. The next phases of the improvements are scheduled to commence in January 2018 alongside the extension to the Arndale.
