Backdating claims

You must apply to us in writing if you want your Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction backdated. You will need to complete a 'Backdated Claim' form. Depending on what you tell us we may ask for supporting evidence. For example; a letter from your doctor if you are/were ill.

In certain circumstances, we may consider backdating your claim for benefits to a date before you made your claim. All requests for backdated benefits must be made in writing and you must have a good reason as to why you could not claim on time.

We can backdate a Housing Benefit claim for up to three months if you are of state pension age, or one month if you are working age, counting back from the date we receive a written request from you. This written request should tell us why you haven't applied for benefit before.

We can backdate a Council Tax Reduction claim for up to three months if you are of state pension age, or six months if you are working age, counting back from the date we receive a written request from you.

We can only backdate your benefit if you are able to show us continuing good cause why you did not claim your benefit at the time, so we will normally need supporting evidence. An example of this may be a letter from your doctor if you have been ill and were unable to put in an application. You will also need to provide proof of all you income and capital for the period you want to claim backdated benefit.

We will look at your request and send you a decision in writing.  If you do not agree with the decision you will need to make an appeal in writing.
