Christmas bin collections and tree recycling

Christmas waste and recycling collections

There are no waste, recycling or garden waste collections on Tuesday 25 December, Wednesday 26 December or Tuesday 1 January

Choose your local council below to find out when your collections are over Christmas and New Year, and how to recycle real Christmas trees.

Festive recycling tips!

  • Flatten cardboard boxes and squash tins, cans and plastic bottles to save space in your recycling bin.

  • We cannot recycle shiny or glittery wrapping paper; glittery cards; ribbons; bows or tape.

  • Do the 'scrunch test' to check if wrapping paper is recyclable – if you scrunch the paper and it stays in a ball, then it can be put into the recycling!

  • Make sure food is removed from foil, card and paper packaging before recycling.

  • Take any extra rubbish or recycling to your local household waste recycling site (HWRS or ‘tip’). Visit East Sussex County Council’s website to find your local HWRS and to check opening dates and times over Christmas and New Year.

If you are a Lewes district resident, please place all household rubbish at the edge of your property by 6am on the revised collection day below. If your bin is not collected on the revised day, please leave it out for collection the following day.

 Christmas tree recycling

If you’re buying a real tree this Christmas, then don’t forget to recycle it. Real trees are usually shredded into clippings which are then used locally in parks or woodland areas.

You can bring your trees to one of the following drop-off points by Sunday 20 January

Lewes: Brook Street car park
Newhaven: Bay Vue car park
Peacehaven: Piddinghoe Avenue car park
Seaford: Richmond Road car park, or Buckle car park

If you are an Eastbourne resident, please make sure that your bin is put out at the boundary of your property by 6am on the day of collection.

If your normal collection day is Tuesday or Wednesday, your collection days over Christmas and New Year are changing:

  • No collection on Tuesday 25 (Christmas Day): Next rubbish and recycling collection will be Saturday 29 December.

  • No collection on Wednesday 26 (Boxing Day): Next rubbish and recycling collection will be Wednesday 2 January.

  • Thursday 27 - Monday 31 December: Normal collections.

  • No collection on Tuesday 1 (New Years Day): Next rubbish and recycling collection will be Tuesday 8 January.

You can also take extra rubbish and recycling to the household waste recycling site at St Philip’s Avenue.

New waste and recycling calendars for 2019 are being sent to all households in December and also includes Christmas and New Year 2018-2019 collection changes. You can also download your recycling calendar from the East Sussex Joint Waste Partnership website.

Recycle your Christmas tree

If you have opted-in to our paid garden waste collection service, you can recycle your real Christmas tree by cutting it up and placing it in your brown bin; or leaving it in manageable chunks (less than 120 cm or 4 feet tall) next to your brown bin.  Please make sure all decorations, tree stands and pots are removed before recycling.

Alternatively, you can take it to one of the many collection points (listed below) across Eastbourne from 3 to 24 January 2019.
