Registration of deaths

You must register a death in Eastbourne or the Lewes district with East Sussex County Council (ESCC) within five days. Registration is done by private phone interview:

The registrar will also explain how to use the government's Tell Us Once Service when someone dies. You can find more information about this service on:

Delays in registration

Sometimes the coroner will be involved. In this case the registrar cannot register the death until the coroner has completed any investigation they decide is necessary. The ESCC registrar will explain this to you, if this is the case.
