- The draft permit application currently being consulted over is for one small waste incineration plant. This would use non-hazardous waste only. The medical waste received will already have been autoclaved (sterilised). The initial application was for two units - one non-hazardous and one hazardous). The hazardous waste plant has been withdrawn from the application. Please note this is not a planning application. A planning application has yet to be made to East Sussex County Council. If it does there will be a further opportunity to provide comments at that stage.
- Some documents such as the Environmental Impact Assessment Scoping request will be superseded to reflect the withdrawal of the hazardous waste plant unit.
The company Medipower Ltd of Shed 4A Newhaven Port, East Quay, Newhaven, East Sussex, BN9 0BN has applied to Lewes District Council for an environmental permit to operate an advanced gasification system, a small waste incineration plant, at Newhaven Port to dispose of non-hazardous medical waste.
The proposal is for the installation of a medical waste combustion plant capable of combusting 12 tonnes of non-hazardous medical waste per day, potentially generating 1.4mW/hour of thermal energy and 250kW/hour of electrical energy. The electrical and thermal energy would be supplied to the Port authority. Thermal energy would be used by local port companies using network heating at the above address.
Following consultation a draft permit has been issued under Regulation 13 of the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016 to Medipower Ltd to operate a small waste incineration plant at Shed 4A, Newhaven Port, East Quay, Newhaven.
Any comments on the draft permit should be sent by 29 May 2018 by email to Ehealth.firstname.lastname@example.org or in writing to Environmental Health, Lewes District Council, Southover House, Southover Road, Lewes, BN7 1AB.
