Council tenants and leaseholders in Eastbourne can now apply for home contents insurance from as little as £5 per month thanks to a new scheme.

Eastbourne Borough Council and Eastbourne Homes have teamed up with Aviva, the UK's biggest insurer, to launch Homes First Insurance following a request from tenants.

Councillor Alan Shuttleworth, Cabinet member for Housing, said: "We insure the structure of council homes but that does not include what's inside such as furniture and belongings.

"If something happens it can be expensive to replace everything you own so we strongly recommend taking up home contents insurance."

|It is suggested that council tenants and leaseholders get their personal items insured against events including:

  • Accidental damage
  • Fire
  • Theft
  • Flooding/escape of water

The Homes First package offers a policy with exclusive rates and a range of optional extras including cover for accidental damage. There is no excess to pay if people need to make a claim and payment can be monthly by direct debit.

The policy is underwritten by Aviva Insurance Limited and administered by Wessex Administration Services Limited which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.
