Guidance on pests

Rats can transmit a number of serious diseases, can cause damage and contaminate food. To prevent rats becoming pests we recommend that you:

  • Keep food in containers with tight fitting lids.
  • Tidy your house and garden - less clutter means less places to hide.
  • Place outside rubbish bags in bins with securely fitted lids.
  • Clean up pet food and bird seed debris.

Lewes District Council

We offer residents one free course of rat treatment per twelve month period, and it will currently be four to five weeks before we are able to visit your premises.

One of our officers will visit you at home to assess the problem, they will look around your property and find the most suitable place to put poison bait, taking into account any risks to the safety of your family, pets and other wildlife. You will be given information about the type of bait used and asked to sign to give us permission to use it.

During the visit, our officer may make recommendations to repair problems at your property (such as holes, problems with drains or air vents) to prevent further infestations.

Once the course of treatment is completed we will arrange to visit you again to remove any leftover poison bait.

Cost: Free

Commercial: £115 minimum, plus bait

Bees

Bees are not pests. We get a number of calls from customers who have mistaken bees for wasps.  Honey bees look similar to wasps but due to their importance to the environment we do not kill them.

If you find a swarm of bees:

  • check the British Bee Keepers' Association website. Firstly, this will help you identify bees from wasps. You can also enter your postcode to find local registered honeybee swarm collectors who will collect the bees for you.
  • we can put you in touch with a local keeper who collects them.

You can download more information about bees in our advice sheet below.

If you live within the Lewes District one of our officers will visit your home and assess the situation. They will then set the traps. Unless the officer believes it to be necessary they will not set traps in gardens because of the possibility of catching something other than a squirrel.

These traps must be checked every day so you will need to be present on each visit. The traps are disabled on Fridays so any squirrels caught are not left inside over the weekend.

Our officers will also advise on how to guard against further squirrels, although this cannot be guaranteed.

Cost: £190 (5 visits over a week)
