Art lovers from far and wide will descend on East Sussex in the coming weeks as Artwave, the annual free arts festival, welcomes thousands of people into private homes, studios, galleries and workshops.
Since it was established 26 years ago, Artwave has become an unmissable part of the summer in East Sussex.
The enchanting nature of the event gives art lovers the chance to discover new artists, meet the makers, and buy direct from them. The diverse range of work on show includes jewellery, painting, sculpture, printmaking, textiles, illustrators, ceramics, stone carving, metalwork, photography and performance art.
Artwave will showcase some of the very best creative talent, taking place over three weekends from 17 August to 1 September.
Visitors can follow the trails and visit artists where their art is created around Lewes, Newhaven, Seaford and surrounding villages - all for free!
In addition to the 140 exhibitions, Artwave is working in partnership with Newhaven Festival (newhavenfestival.co.uk), Seaford Contemporary Illustrators and Printmakers (wearescip.co.uk/the-green-show), and Lewes Depot (lewesdepot.org/artwave) to stage programmed events across Newhaven, Seaford and Lewes.
Councillor Ruth O’Keeffe, Cabinet Member for Tourism, said:
“This arts event is genuinely like no other. Being able to visit so many wonderfully creative people, often in their own homes, provides an added dimension to appreciating the artwork on show.
“I encourage everyone to pick up a brochure or go online and plan a visit, through rural idylls or bustling towns, you are guaranteed to discover some real Artwave gems.”
Artwave is also inspiring the next generation of artists through three family workshops – all free of charge. The nature and environment themed workshops take place in Newhaven (17-18 August), Seaford (15-18 and 22-25 August) and The Amazing Art Cart in Lewes (31 August). See artwavefestival.org/family-events for full details.
Councillor O’Keeffe added:
“I would like to give special thanks to all the generous supporters, sponsors and the artists who are taking part this year - without whom Artwave would not be possible.”
Whether visiting for an afternoon, weekend or even a week, join the art trail, support the community of artists and makers and explore this vibrant part of Sussex.
