Lewes District and Eastbourne Borough Councils are carrying out a review of all residents receiving a Single Person Discount on their Council Tax bill.
This is the 25% discount which can be claimed when an adult is the sole occupant of a property.
The Single Person Discount review, being launched on Monday (October 1), will identify anyone fraudulently claiming this Council Tax discount.
Councillor Stephen Holt, Eastbourne Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Finance, said: “The vast majority of residents who claim the discount are entitled to it. However, we are aware of a small number of people who are attempting to fraudulently claim this discount including by not reporting changes in their circumstances. The review will identify these people.”
All residents in Lewes district and Eastbourne currently receiving a Single Person Discount will be sent a letter from the service Datatank, on behalf of their council, asking for them to confirm or update their living circumstances.
People must respond to this letter to ensure they continue receiving their Single Person Discount, otherwise it may be removed.
Councillor Bill Giles, Lewes District Council’s Cabinet member for Finance, said: “We are vigilant in checking that people claiming discounts are entitled to do so, and we take any incidents of Council Tax fraud very seriously.”
