Pet shop licence

The Pet Animals 1951 (Amendment) Act 1983 defines a pet shop a business of selling animals as pets, and keeping animals with a view to them being sold by the keeper or by any other person.

Licences are renewed annually and run from 1 January to 31 December.

For further information and your rights on how the council uses your personal information please read our privacy notice.

Fees

The cost of a Pet Shop Licence is £145.00 plus the vet's fees.

If we need to re-inspect the premises we charge a £60.00 re-inspection fee.

How to apply

When we receive an application and fee we arrange to inspect the premises. This will take into account the register of animals purchased, where they were purchased from, their welfare, isolation/quarantine facilities and general housekeeping.

A licence and a copy of the conditions will only be issued if the inspection is satisfactory. These conditions should be kept to and a copy of the licence should be on visible display at all times.
