Article 4 directions

An article 4 direction is made by the local planning authority. It restricts the scope of permitted development rights either in relation to a particular area or site, or a particular type of development.

This means that you may have to submit a planning application for work which does not normally need one. An article 4 direction is specific to the area it covers and can restrict a range of works from extensions and garden structures, to painting the exterior of your house.

Article 4 directions are made when the character of an area would be threatened by inappropriate works being carried out. They offer additional protection to an area and are most common in conservation areas.
