The climate change and sustainability strategy

Newhaven Energy Framework

Newhaven was used as a test case to understand how a town can move toward net zero in a way that is practical, fair and affordable. The study included homes, commercial buildings, transport and energy infrastructure to identify which solutions are realistic and what could happen next.

Newhaven Energy Framework model

The work to date

  • Electricity demand could rise sharply with transport electrification seeing the biggest demand
  • Heat networks are unlikely to be viable at town scale, so individual heat solutions for each home will be more suitable
  • Rooftop solar is a strong near-term opportunity for homes and commercial buildings
  • Smart grid and flexibility measures will be needed to manage future demand efficiently
  • Transport demand reduction such as public transport and active travel will be important to supporting future success

What happens next

The next phase is to work with the community and partners to create investable projects and a phased delivery roadmap for Newhaven.  We will also disseminate the work so that other towns can learn from our findings to accelerate the net-zero transition.
