Nearly 200 attend rights of rivers event
An environmental event hosted by Lewes District Council, Matrix Chambers, Love Our Ouse and the Environmental Law Foundation welcomed nearly 200 delegates.

The event follows on from Lewes District Council, Love Our Ouse and partners establishing the principles of a Rights of River Charter, identifying fundamental rights for the River Ouse.
Zoe Leventhal KC of Matrix Chambers, said:
"Well done to the brilliant panel of speakers whose short talks were full of practical know-how as well as inspiring stories of how adopting a Rights of Nature framework can move the urgent need to protect nature up the agenda.
"Matrix was proud to co-host this and support this important grassroots movement, to help spread the word."
The webinar provided practical insights into how councils can take action to support rights‑based approaches to environmental protection, with contributions from legal experts, campaigners, and local government representatives.
Councillor Emily O'Brien, Cabinet Member for Climate, Nature and Food Systems said:
"The fact that nearly 200 people joined us shows just how much momentum there is behind the rights of rivers movement.
"This is about giving nature a voice in decision‑making, and I am delighted that Lewes District Council and our partners are leading the way.
"Together we are demonstrating that councils can play a vital role in shaping a future where the health of our rivers is safeguarded for generations to come."
