Eastbourne partnership launches 'Positive Giving' campaign to tackle homelessness and rough sleeping

Eastbourne Borough Council, in collaboration with a network of local homelessness charities, has launched a new campaign, urging residents and visitors to reconsider how they provide support to those on the streets.

The "Positive Giving" initiative aims to shift the focus from handing out spare change to donating directly to established charitable support services. While giving money to individuals may feel like an act of immediate kindness, experts warn that it often acts as a "sticking plaster" that can inadvertently keep people trapped in a cycle of homelessness rather than helping them exit it.

By directing donations to registered local charities, the public can ensure their generosity funds long-term solutions. This includes everything from food, clothes, hygiene essentials, to safe accommodation and support to rediscover skills and overcome barriers to achieve a more stable lifestyle.

Cllr Stephen Holt, Leader of Eastbourne Borough Council, said: "We understand the instinctive desire to help when you see someone in need, however, the most effective way to improve lives and create lasting opportunities is through the structured support provided by our brilliant local charities. We want to ensure every penny donated goes toward getting people off the streets for good."

The campaign will include a range of posters, social media and other publicity, intended to raise awareness of the importance of positive giving.

Roland Brown, Chief Executive of Kingdom Way Trust, said: "It is good to be working in partnership with other local charities and agencies to provide support and practical help to those on the streets. Our aim is to see them move to a more stable situation with a future of hope and purpose. The generosity of many, including through this campaign, enables us as charities to provide ongoing support.

Residents and visitors who wish to make a meaningful impact are encouraged to visit the dedicated campaign web page, which provides links to trusted local partners where donations can be made securely.

Donations can also be made via the Fresh Start 'tap board', located outside The Clock House restaurant on Cornfield Road, Eastbourne.

Any residents, businesses or organisations wishing to support the campaign can download a copy of the poster to put up in windows or notice boards.

The campaign follows recent multi-agency taskforce operation at Eastbourne railway station aimed at improving public spaces and connecting vulnerable individuals with support services.
