Standing room only as residents send 'crystal clear' message to government

The event was so well attended by residents that it became standing room only, with people lining the walls to make sure their voices were heard.

Residents from Falmer, East Saltdean, Telscombe and Peacehaven spoke passionately about the proposal to move parts of Lewes district into Brighton & Hove, with many describing the proposal as unnecessary, unwanted and damaging to local community ties.

Councillor Zoe Nicholson, Leader of Lewes District Council, said:

"Tonight showed the strength of feeling in our communities. People turned out in huge numbers because they care deeply about where they live and they are tired of being ignored.

"The government is now running a second consultation, without even publishing the results of the first one. Residents deserve honesty, transparency and respect, and they made that point powerfully this evening."

The meeting included an update on the consultation process and an opportunity for residents to share their experiences and concerns. Many expressed frustrations at the uncertainty created by repeated consultations and the lack of clarity from central government.

Councillor Christine Robinson, Deputy Leader of Lewes District Council, said:

"What we saw tonight was a community standing together. People feel proud to belong to Lewes district, and they do not want decisions about their future made without them.

"Local identity, local voice and local accountability matter, and our residents made that crystal clear."

The council continues to urge everyone affected to respond to the consultation before it closes.
