Work begins on new accessible path at Malling Recreation Ground
Cyclists and walkers in the Lewes area will soon benefit from a new all-weather path across Malling Recreation Ground, linking the riverside path and Wiley's Bridge with routes into Malling and on to Ringmer.

The project was devised by Cycle Lewes and has been made possible thanks to grant funding from the South Downs National Park Community Interest Levy, Ouse Valley Climate Action's 'Community Pitch' fund, Lewes Town Council, and is being delivered by Lewes District Council.
The new shared-use surfaced path will follow a well-used informal route already used by cyclists, and also involves widening part of the existing surfaced path so that walkers and cyclists can safely share it. It will be particularly helpful to those with mobility issues and parents/carers with buggies or prams. Malling Recreation Ground is a popular destination, with playing fields, skatepark, playground, recently refurbished community centre, and riverbank, and it is also a link between Malling and Lewes Town Centre.
The works have been scheduled to minimise disruption, and steps will be taken to ensure Malling Park Run can continue to use its usual route each Saturday during construction.
Cllr Laurence O'Connor, Cabinet Member for Planning and Infrastructure at Lewes District Council, said:
"We are delighted to be a partner in this project, which is a great example of what can be achieved through collaboration between councils and community organisations. I would like to thank all partners that have provided grant funding and particular thanks to Cycle Lewes for being the driving force behind this project."
Sheila O'Sullivan, Chair of Cycle Lewes, said:
"It is great news that one of our ideas can now be put into practice. The new path will make for easier, safer and more pleasant cycling and walking in an increasingly busy part of the town."
Cycle Lewes is a community group representing cyclists and cycling interests in Lewes and the surrounding area. It promotes cycling for all in and around Lewes, and campaigns for safer streets and routes.
