Mayor and Deputy Mayor enjoy active start to civic year

The Mayor of Eastbourne has begun her second year in office with a full programme of engagements, supporting local charities, celebrating community achievements and participating in a wide range of cultural and civic events across the town.

Councillor Margaret Bannister joined Eastbourne Carnival, the opening of the Sussex Surgical Centre during a royal visit, Armed Forces Day celebrations and the Eastbourne Community Awards, while continuing her support for local voluntary groups, schools and charities. 

Among the Mayor's first engagements following her re-election in May were the launch of Eastbourne's new Pride in Place Regeneration Plan, the 999 Emergency Services Display and the Eastbourne International Singing Festival. She also took part in the East Sussex Philippine Festival and celebrated the 10th anniversary of Linking Lives Eastbourne.

June saw the Mayor support a diverse range of community and charitable organisations. Highlights included Eastbourne Pride, the King's Award for Voluntary Service Nominees Reception, Eastbourne In Bloom planting activities at Holywell, Age Concern Eastbourne's AGM and Armed Forces Day. She also enjoyed the Eastbourne Symphony Orchestra Summer Concert and the Eastbourne Education Business Partnership Young Chef of the Year competition.

Councillor Bannister has continued to champion Eastbourne's thriving cultural scene, attending performances by the Eastbourne Gilbert and Sullivan Society, Concentus, Eastbourne Choral Society and Phoenix Choir, and the Eastbourne Silver Band. She also joined celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of Our Lady of Ransom Church and the 15th anniversary of Kingdom Way Trust.

July's engagements included Old Town Hat Fest, the Eastbourne Charity and Public Services Football Tournament, a British Empire Medal Investiture ceremony at the Town Hall, the opening of the show suite at Harbourside House, a new retirement living development, and an Eastbourne citizenship ceremony. 

Councillor Bannister said: "It has been a privilege to begin another year as Mayor of Eastbourne and to meet so many dedicated volunteers, community groups, charities and organisations. From cultural celebrations and community awards to events recognising service, achievement and inclusion, I have once again seen the very best of Eastbourne and the people who make our town such a special place."

Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor Councillor Teri Sayers-Cooper has also represented the town at a number of community and cultural events. Her engagements have included visits to Eastbourne Bridge Club and the Dortmund Carnival Party, supporting the Eastbourne Chinese Association's Dragon Boat Festival and being among guests at an open day aboard the replica sailing ship NAO Santa MarĂ­a at Sovereign Harbour.

The Deputy Mayor has also attended the Eastbourne Concert Orchestra's 75th Anniversary Gala Concert, the Eastbourne Carnival Entrants Evening and the Medi Tech Trust Presentation Evening, helping to support local organisations and celebrate community achievements across Eastbourne and the wider area.
