Food hygiene rating scheme

We use the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS) in partnership with the Food Standards Agency (FSA), to rate the hygiene standards of food businesses.

About the scheme

Each business is given their hygiene rating when it is inspected by a food safety officer from the business's local authority. The food safety officer inspecting the business checks how well the business is meeting the law by looking at:

  • how hygienically the food is handled - how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored
  • the condition of the structure of the buildings - the cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities
  • how the business manages and records what it does to make sure food is safe

For more information about the scheme please visit the FSA's food hygiene ratings schemes where you can also find a toolkit encouraging businesses to promote good hygiene.
